The District has begun generating a list of local horse owners wishing to give away free horse manure to homeowners. This material can be used to add organic matter and nutrients to lawns, flower beds, and vegetable gardens. We are calling this new service the Manure Exchange Program, with the aim of moving excess manure from small horse properties to homes that can utilize it.

The nutrients in horse manure are in an organic form. As organic matter decomposes, nutrients enter the soil slowly, so that plants have a steady supply of nutrients, and less nitrogen leaches into the groundwater. Organic matter also increases soil nutrient and water holding capacity and soil tilth.

If you are interested in obtaining horse manure, call the District at (540) 899-9492, ext 3, or email us at ellen.schwartz@va.nacdnet.net, and request a list of horse owners wanting to give away excess manure. If you are a horse owner wanting to get onto the list, please contact us.
